Not all Print sizes are equal… tips on Purchasing Photographic Prints

PRINT SIZES

I often will get questions about why a 4×6 print looks different from a 5×7 or  8×10 inch print… it has to do with the ratios of the rectangle.

The aspect ratio is the ratio of the width of the image to it’s height. Cameras haves different aspect ratios… my camera’s is equivalent to a 8×12 ratio which means multiples of that ratio such as 2×3,4×6,12,x18, 16×24 will look like the original image.

Let’s use some examples of the same image to illustrate the differences.  If you decide to purchase an 8×10 you will notice in the example below that it is a different ratio from the 8×12 and cropping will occur.  The image comes in tighter and we crop off some of her arm and the space above her head. This happens with the 5×7 however it is not as extreme of a crop, because the ratio is closer to the 8×12 aspect ratio of the camera.

Most standard frame sizes are 4×6, 5×7, 8×10, 11×14, and 16×20 inches. When you purchase an print with a different aspect ratio from the camera please keep in mind that cropping will occur. This becomes more of an issue is when we have a close up photograph tightly cropped on the subject, because we may start cropping out the key points of interest in the photograph.

There are several options around this such as using a matte with larger frame size, custom framing, a custom print size or adding a border around the photograph so that it fits a standard size frame.

CROPPING

All images are printed as shown the image gallery unless you request the image be cropped. This example on the left shows the shirt blown by the wind, in many cases you can crop out elements as demonstrated by the image on the right.
